Beastie Boys

launched: 2009

project type: websites

project with: chime interactive

In 2009, Beastie Boys reissued deluxe sets for 4 of their biggest albums. We met Beastie Boys in their studio to brainstorm new ideas for a stylized microsite representing each album. We also worked closely with our friends at Topspin music to integrate their awesome music marketing features into our platform.

Paul’s Boutique

This site begins with a single volume knob interface. Spin the knob to turn up the features of the site. On this classic album, Beastie Boys relentlessly throw down one pop culture reference after the next. We tried to convey this in the information overload layout of the site, as well as the "Get Lyrical" feature. This feature takes the song you are listening to, searches for lyrical keywords on Flickr, and creates a unique slideshow just about any time you visit.

This site also featured user trading cards and stories, collectible Beastie Boys cards, and of course, a Ping Pong Game.

Check Your Head

This was the first Beastie Boys album that really focused on the instrumentals, and combined skate culture and hip hop culture in a new way. For this site we went for a hand-drawn, Sharpie look, and featured an interactive studio mixer, a user generated collage, and the Wave Skater game, where you skate on top of the album's actual sound waves.

Ill Communication

This album is best known for it's hit single "Sabotage" and we really milked it. The site features a "Sabotage Yourself" character generator, and a Google Earth mashup, where you can drive Beastie Boys' cop car all over the map (best with music).

Hello Nasty

We used cinema4D and papervision3D to bring you this space epic featuring a tour of Beatie Boys' starbound studio, a weightless basketball game, and loads of remixes.
